A night just about well spent in front of the television made up tonight's proceedings.
It didn't get off to a good start where as expected John Barrowman's
"Tonight's The Night" was dreadful. It was basically "Surprise Suprise"
meets Jane McDonald's "Star For A Night" only this time round it gave ordinary low lifes the chance to perform without being humiliated in front of a set of judges.
That wasn't necessarily the overall problem as it was down to the ever gormless presenting manner of John and the fact that the first thing he did was sing after the titles had finished. In this case a rather toe curling rendition of the Pointer Sisters' "Excited".
Apart from the fact that it had "Showbiz" Mitch Johnson as the voiceover
(for a much needed change) it wasn't enough for me to avoid the off button before the show had ended.
Luckily there was a remedy in the form of Britain's Got Talent where tonight saw yet another interesting if embarrassing selection of performers.
One who certainly didn't fall into the latter was a 39 year old sax player from Birmingham who gave a superb Kenny G-esque rendition of "Somewhere" from West Side Story getting the nod from all three judges and even bringing Amanda to tears.
Less than successful were an idiot dressed as Darth Vader and a woman who claimed that her parrot could sing with her. This ended up looking like something from Pets Win Prizes and she didn't survived getting buzzed by the judges which was lucky for me as I find parrots rather sinister.
The final act on tonight's show was a young boy at the Cardiff audtions who came on stage to perform "Valerie" but was stopped about a quarter of the way into the song when Simon asked them to change it to a slightly older song which was more emphatic.
Yet another convention of how parts of (possibly all of) the show are staged and having that bleeding song from High School Musical to add tension didn't necessarily help.
I'll carry on watching though, especially as they'll be showing Kelly Brook's brief stint as a judge next week which I didn't think would actually make it on-screen.
As for tonight's Hell's Kitchen it got extremely heated where Jody Latham obsessed with the fact that his family were amongst that night's diners, got too big for his boots.
However the way he was acting made me think that he was getting "mentally elevated" (if there's such a description) and acting rather bizarrely to the point of being oblivious to all of the other kitchen staff he was snapping at for no good reason, and pissing them off overall.
My own perception why he started acting like that was because Marco made postive comments about the dish he made in that morning's challenge and he ended up taking things for granted and upsetting others.
I don't think Jody realised how obxnoxious he was acting in front of others and although he didn't raise his temper Ade Edmondson was one of those who felt very strongly, even referring to him as a wanker.
Marco however made the decision not to sack him and wanted to give him a second chance in the space of 24 hours. When he went round the rest of the chefs they all agreed with his reasoning although Marco pointed out that he needed to up his game and stop slacking.
Criticise all you want, but there's no denying that there's some great telly currently around.
I guess the reason I become attached is that unlike Big Brother and several soap operas, the likes of BGT and Hell's Kitchen only run for a few weeks and don't outstay their welcome.
Anyway I'd best start proof reading and attempting to make my dissertation more academic with some Shakatak playing in the background.
