The digital social networking world has gone insane in response to the
BBC's announced plans to shut down 6Music as part of a series of cutbacks.
For me it's just another example of the BBC trying to please the government
and a possible Conservative government at that, rather than putting the
viewers and listeners first.
But having looked at the "editorial priorities" on the BBC's website,
it appears that one of them is to produce "Outstanding Children's Content".
This isn't going to go down well with many people I know well,
but I have had an interest in that area of the media longer than radio
and although it's not really aimed at me, it could definitely put
more ideas back into the heads of younger audiences.
After all, they'll be running the corporation in 30 or so years and if
ideas don't buck up, television and radio will be in a worse shape than it is now.
However I'm not sure where to draw to conclusions on this issue.
A good majority I have spoke to from University who isn't within
a close radio circle have mentioned that they listen to 6Music and
can actually relate to specific shows or presenters.
That's something that I've not known to happen with a single music
based radio station for sometime outside of Radio 1.
Mark Thompson on the other hand mentioned in an interview on the
BBC News Channel that 6Music wasn't value for money considering it's
small audience size and that the content would be split over Radios 1 and 2,
and the Asian Network likewise for BBC Local Radio.
A risky move to take with regards to 6Music because as a listener, I wouldn't want to sit through tons of crap being uttered getting in the way of
music that's played in a designated timeslot with less informed
presenters.
Well that's what I'm worried about anyway as I'd much rather have
Lauren Laverne switched on than Fearne Cotton who tries too hard.
With regards to BBC Switch suggesting that Channel 4 does teen programming
better than them, you only have to watch an episode of "Skins"
followed by BBC Switch's "Off The Hook" to prove so.
And you wonder why the Harrow Campus, sorry, site, gets such a ribbing.
I'll take a break from this until around 6pm but it is exciting you have
to admit.
