Backing yourself up is important whenver you're making a statement, and not just in a poncey media theory essay.
To prove a point, about a year ago I once introduced a record by Junior and the brilliant "Mama Used To Say" by describing him as "the man who could have been the new Stevie Wonder but ended up being the new Delbert Wilkins".
And I'm afraid it's very true, Junior Giscombe at the time was now DJing on Solar Radio for 4 days each week proving a point that those who make the music aren't great at playing it and the same can be said for radio presenters vice versa.
Here's the man in action just to give you an idea.
You can tell that Junior's enthusiastic and there were some stunning records in that show but EVERY DAY! How could you put up with that constant shouting, repetitive features and someone who's ego's big enough to play his own records on his own show!
I'd love to meet Junior and he has a wicked sense of humour, but please never go near a studio desk again unless it's in a recording studio. I can remember him in an interview on Solar where they played one of his lesser known hits "Too Late" resulting in him getting really annoyed about other radio interviewers playing "Mama Used To Say".
Lisa Stansfield can put up with the fact that "All Around The World" is what she'll be remembered for and on a lower, well very low note, Chris De Burgh and "The Lady In Red".
Stephen H was telling me when he and his wife Elle were at a dinner with Frank McComb that Junior, also present was one of the nicest guys but in Elle's words "didn't half like talking about himself..."
Overall it's another area to add to the guide to making great radio and great music and how the two don't always mix...
Oh and the answer to Junior's teaser, by definition, is Tina Turner.
