Press Start

Tonight saw Charlie Brooker make a one off apearance on BBC Four with "Gameswipe" taking a swipe at video games past and present.

I liked how at the start it looked at how video games and computers seemed to be neglected on television in the 80s with the exception of shows such as the BBC's "Micro Live, until the early 90s when shows such as Gamesmaster became popular on Channel 4, whilst less than succesful was the virtual reality show "Cyberzone" on BBC 2 hosted by Craig Charles, and made by the same people behind "Knightmare".

There was a dissection into the various game genres with the one grabbing my interest being the first person shooters with a re-made version of Wolfenstein on the X Box.

I personally prefer the original release on the PC back in 1992 where as Brooker mentioned it was a lot more humorous and made the Nazi enemies look like something from "Allo Allo".

One of my favourite parts came from contributor Dara O'Briain who let off steam over games which contained impossible levels so early in the game such as unlocking songs from Rock Band, and travelling through slow traffic in GTA 4 where if you get caught by the police, you have to go through the whole ordeal again.

Definitely an interesting insight into one of Charlie's favourite subjects and one worth checking on iPlayer.

It's made me realise that I'm not really missing much gaming wise.
