The staff and shoppers of a popular shopping centre in Essex have made a return to our screens on BBC 2's "Return To Lakesiders", the latest in a series of programmes revisting those who leapt to stardom through the many docusoaps that were on our screens in the late 90s.
One of the key characters appearing in Lakesiders was Essex FM's breakfast DJ Martin Day who back in those days had rather dreadful hair that made Pat Sharp look attractive.
The main focus in the series was the rather tense relationship between him and the station's programme controller Paul Chantler who would often call Martin into his office for a number of reasons such as straying from the playlist and playing his own records.
Tonight's episode involved Martin taking a reluctant Paul for a flight in his aeroplane which almost ended in near danger due to the plane being unable to fly properly whilst in mid air. The story ended up in the major newspapers with one of them comparing Paul Chantler's physical form to Chewbacca. I always thought that Jabba the Hut was a more appropriate likeness.
Later in the series we see how Paul managed to get his own back on Martin by getting him to appear on the BBC 1 daytime show "Style Challenge" and finally get his hair cut shorter.
Overall it's good to get an insight behind the scenes of one of, if not the most influential radio stations I've listened to even if there were tensions going on behind the microphone.
