After appearing as a guest on The ONE Show on Monday it appears that Tony Blackburn has fallen ill so in his place on his KMFM Sunday show will be Mike Read.
God help the Garden of England.
As the show's pre recorded earlier in the week Tony's a bit better now as he was doing the weekend breakfast show on Smooth Radio this morning and will probably be back again tomorrow and and on his Sunday Show on BBC London 94.9.
On the subject of Mike Read, E4 have been repeating Harvey Goldsmith's "Get Your Act Together" series from last year and on his visit to the ailing radio station "Big L" in Frinton Mike tried so desperately in front of the camera to present himself as an "ideas man".
I only wish that there were stronger words than "bollocks" to describe that above statement.
When you look at Mike and all the other dinosaurs at Big L such as "Divvy" David Hamilton,
it shows that even if his act hasn't really changed, Tony has survived because he's the best at what he does, and is more than happy to take the mickey out of himself at any time, whereas the likes of Read and Hamilton just can't get it into their brains that they are stuck in the past and take it all rather seriously.
Even worse is Steve Wright on Radio 2 and I've no clue as to why he's survived as he still sounds like if he's stuck in 1985.
I've heard from others that you must never look him in the eye whilst he's "in the zone" and that he is very protective over how the show is done.
I haven't seen him on television for a long time either which may explain a few things although I imagine his voice will be popping up on TOTP2 again this Christmas which I don't think he's too bad at actually.
Moving back to the Big L documentary and the worst protagonist was the station manager Chris Vesey, and it would be very difficult for me not to use the C-word to describe him. Especially after bollocking a presenter on air just for getting a link slightly wrong, which for me is one of my golden rules of radio, never to reprimand or do anything similar to a presenter during a show.
Although as mentioned yesterday I do tend to do so in a jokey manner to certain people on Smoke although overall I'm laughing with them at the whatever the naughty joke is that they've told on air.
I'm also looking forward to watching how Harvey gets on with the likes of aged rock band Saxon, Pablo's Circus, and singer and Irish babe Samantha Mumba.
Samantha of course ended up as one of the contestants on this year's Dancing On Ice although whether that did any favours for her career I'm not sure.
It's a shame as she did some really good tunes such as "Gotta Tell You" and "Always Come Back To Your Love" although we'll try and forget her song which half inched David Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes" which went by the title of "Body 2 Body".
That and her younger brother Omero who did a rather dodgy rap record to the tune of Lucy Pearl's "Don't Mess With My Man" which also happened to be covered by Booty Luv last year which wasn't too bad but nowhere as good as the original.
I'd have definitely loved to have heard more from them.
