"Oi've Kindapped You!"

The first half of this afternoon has been spent watching another showing of the superb TV dramatisation of "Goodnight Mister Tom" which is exactly 10 years since it's original transmission and definitely another staple of the Christmas schedule every couple of years.

Possibly the late John Thaw's best role apart from The Sweeney, the actor plays the role of Tom Oakley who takes into his home an evacuee from London called William who begins to have the best time in his life within the village of Little Weirwold.

I always end up cheering or laughing whenever Tom does something drastic to the belt that William's bible bashing bat of a mother has given him as he doesn't like how she used it to beat him.

Quite a lot of changes were also made to the TV drama from Michelle Margorian's original novel including the removal of that ridiculous plot involving William, Zach, Carrie and Ginny etc putting on a play, although I can imagine that would be a bugger to include.

I also noticed that a few utterances of mild language had been removed except in the scene where Tom is arguing with the Home Officer who wants William to move into a children's home with the villainous (or appears to be that way) Doctor Stelton who has been giving William nightmares.

Overall it's still one of the best cosy family television dramas of recent times and quite possibly the only good programme to have been made by Carlton Television.
