Tonight's gig with Frankie Beverly and Maze at the Hammersmith Appollo was another one of those gigs which turned out to be even better than what I expected it to be.
I arrived in time to see the support acts which started off with Adelaide McKenzie, a soul vocalist who's new to me but gave a really good performance including a version of Mary Mary's "Shackles".
This was followed by someone who I really didn't expect to see performing, Don-E who is best known for his 1992 Top 40 hit "Love Makes The World Go Round" as well as being Beverley Knight's cousin. He performed two tracks from his new album including a cover of Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain" as well as the stunning title track from his 1992 album "Unbreakable".
The last of the support acts consisted of two members of Light Of The World who performed songs from George Benson and Luther Vandross as well as two of their own songs including "London Town".
Things really got exciting as the main act was about to start when all the lights went down and the band members came on stage although it was about five minutes before they actually started the crowd were really enthusiastic throughout. The lighting itself was absolutley stunning where the backgrounds would change and the house lights would come on at unexpected points adding to the excitement.
I'd never actually seen Frankie Beverly before tonight and was a lot slimmer compared to how I thought he would be. He was also wearing what looked like a nylon t-shirt with a baseball cap and really was sweating as the performance progressed.
Overall it was superb throughout with tunes such as "We Are One" and "Running Away" as well as "Joy And Pain" which everyone was joining in with and just sped by.
Definitely worth the wait and a superb way to start my final year at University.
