For those lamenting BBC 1's Christmas trail, believe me,
as the spirit of television presentation past I assure you
that it's not the worst.
That honour would possibly go to the CBBC team in 1998, and
their seasonal promotion featuring Otis dressed as a cracker,
performing a rendition of the Bouncing Czech's festive flop
"I'm A Little Christmas Cracker".
I'm pretty certain all the presenters in that clip would look back
on that with irony, especially Richard McCourt now one half of
the anarchic Dick And Dom who both have a habit of ridiculing
their CBBC past in Studio 9.
The Bouncing Czechs original happened to be a favourite of
former Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies, who on the day before his timely
departure, played the record itself on air.
Whether it was in a bitter vein or not, it pretty much makes DLT's
on-air resignation sound defensible.
One things for certain, the only thing coming close to a Christmas song
that I'll play on my own radio show is this rather impressive offering
from Cool Million.
