Tonight's X Factor was pretty good consisting mainly of disco performances.
My personal favourite once again was Laura performing the song she sang in the auditions "Somebody Else's Guy" by Jocelyn Brown allowing her to keep her place in the competition.
There were two songs by Donna Summer in tonight's show which were "Enough Is Enough" as performed by Ruth, and "On The Radio" by Alexandra who looked rather like a mermaid in that scaly dress she was wearing. JLS came up on top form with their version of "Working My Way Back To You" by the Detroit Spinners and oddly enough their mentor Louis Walsh actually had that song released in Ireland by Boyzone before they made it big with their cover of "Love Me For A Reason".
I'm hoping the boys from JLS do well enough to get into the final or hopefully get a record deal as they've got the potential to become a modern day equivalent of British soul vocal groups such as The Pasadenas or Damage.
My least favourite performance of the night was Diana's rendition of "Call Me" by Blondie which isn't even a disco song for goodness sake, and it didn't help that she just did the song sitting down with a load of rollerskaters stealing the limelight and quite rightly so.
In the vote off was Rachel and Austin who both gave really good performances to save their places but in the end the majority of the judges decided to vote off Austin who in all fairness has been a really good sport throughout the series. I'm also surprised how Daniel has managed to last so long into the series and whilst I've nothing against him it will be difficult to imagine him winning.
Will Young wasn't too bad either, the new single whilst not being perfect is slightly better than his last one and it was good to see him working with the contestants on the songs they had chosen.
Next week doesn't look too good though as they'll be performing songs by Mariah Carey for goodness sake. As if their cover of "Hero" wasn't bad enough. Then again there are one or two decent tunes she's done such as "Anytime You Need A Friend" and more recently "Touch My Body".
In between the main show and the vote off I decided to have a listen to Alex Lester now in Russell Brand's old slot on Radio 2 explaining he was in that slot partly because he "had similar hair".
It's difficult to imagine him with long hair even though it shows on his Radio 2 homepage, but I've always got an image of him from back in the late 80s as shown here.
At least he's not afraid to show his face unlike Steve Wright recently who really has let himself go. I'd imagine it's not called "The Big Show" for nothing.
