There's a lot of confusion as to how long the critical report for the live part of the Advanced Radio module should be as I had mine at 6000 words whilst Chris, Phil and Denis have been certain it should be around 3000 words. The details of the word count in total aren't clear enough in the course handbook although it suggests that it should be written in a 40:60 ratio in terms of covering both the live part and the individual part of the module.
It would make a fuck of a lot more sense if it said that both critical reports should be around 3000-4000 words each as we have to hand in a seperate one for each part, even though this is one very big module.
However I've cut down my one to just over 3000 words by taking out some of the analysis from the listening exercises and turning the factual report into bullet points.
Hopefully it manages to cover everything required, i.e. not just my own contribution but how I felt we worked as a team.
I managed to edit it down whilst watching tonight's X Factor which was devoted to Mariah Carey songs or more specifically songs performed by Mariah Carey as there were a few of her covers as well.
These included Rachel performing "Against All Odds" which Mariah absolutley ruined alongside Westlife resulting in people telling the joke which started off with the line "What do you call a dog with five dicks?".
There was also Alexandra who performed the ever dreadful "Without You" which Mariah reached number one with back in 1994, the same year that it's original performer Harry Nillson passed away which may suggest a few things. To be honest it's a dreadful song overall, regardless of who sings it.
JLS went for the obvious choice of "One Sweet Day" Mariah's duet with Boyz II Men but I was disapointed that no one chose to sing any of her more livelier songs such as "Emotion", "Dreamlover" or "Fantasy".
Diana however was unable to perform due to having laryngitis but the producers of the show have allowed her to return next week. Although I'm not a fan of Diana I think it is a fair decision as it's a dreadful illness to have for someone who lives for performing.
It's not the first time however that something like this has happened as in the first series of Pop Idol, Rik Waller had to pull out of the first live show for the same reasons dropping out of the contest a week after, although by this time he had started to believe the hype around him.
The vote-off at the end was between Laura and Ruth with Daniel managing to get the public vote for yet another week. I thought Laura gave a really good performance earlier on in the show and playing the piano too although I wasn't too sure if it was genuine after standing up towards the end of her song.
Inevitably she was voted off by the judges although I didn't think the songs that were sung in the vote-off were executed that well.
Hopefully next week will be more enjoyable with a few more uptempo performances which they really seem to be shying away from this series.
