Tonight's Gulbenkian outing went well although the performance
from Jason Byrne itself was a bit longer than I expected it to be.
They could have easily put all the side-splitting parts into one half
than divide it into two but when it was funny it was funny.
There weren't too many eye related gags this time thankfully
although I was laughing at the gags about confronting
a fan in Edinburgh prior to a gig, and having to babysit a child
during a crucial Irish football match.
And yes, there were plenty of rant gags about Thierry Henry.
The music played before and in between the sets sounded like it was
off an best of 1999 album with quite a few guitar tunes from that year
such as "Pick A Part That's New" by The Stereophonics,
"Pumping On Your Stereo" by Supergrass as well as "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim.
There were a few 80s tunes as well occasionally such as "Walk Like An Egyptian"
and as I was walking out near the end it played "Rhythm Of The Night" by
Debarge, a tune I will strongly associate with many a summer soul show
I did at Smoke.
I can't get away from music memory magnets, that's something I've got
to live with.
But that's also had me thinking, I wanted to get into radio so I could play
records like that Debarge track on a commercial station along the same lines
of Invicta FM 15 years ago or 96.4 The Eagle in Surrey for example when
they had the JAM jingles.
It was radio you could have on as background whilst doing
everyday activities not knowing what tune would come next whilst
at the same time it was incredibly fresh in terms of new records
that were appearing.
No wonder Chris Moyles gets over enthusiastic whenever they do
The Golden Hour every Friday.
The difference is it comes across without any drop of cheese whatsoever.
It can be done.
Best to get back into the present and Charlie Brooker's Newswipe where
this week they looked at the continuing struggle of politicians
to make themselves look more accesible and "more human".
It wasn't as good as last weeks or most of the earlier shows in the
series athough I could tell from Charlie's Twitter updates that
editing this week's show was very uncertain at times.
I'm guessing that next week will be the final proper show
and after that will be a highlights show which I doubt
I'll be that excited about.
At least with Mock The Week they show some of the balls ups
which I'd imagine there'd be a lot of on Newswipe in terms
of getting links right but with all due respect it wouldn't be as
sidesplitting.
According to an interview in Radio Times, Charlie also has a Radio Four
series starting later in the year as well so it will be interesting to see
how sharp his tounge will straighten on the noise box.
Good Night.
