Unjustified Charity

The Simon Cowell masterminded (and I use that word loosely) version
of "Everybody Hurts" made it's radio debut on many stations in the UK
this morning and from a personal point of view it's barely inspiring at all.

They could have recorded the song in a different key for a start
and the arrangement is barely any different to the original.

An absolute waste, considering I recently rediscovered
the Paul Anka version
from the "Rock Swings" LP released in 2005
and although it's meant to be a light hearted album overall
Paul's version of the R.E.M. tune really grabbed me to a certain extent
and had me thinking more about what it's actually about.

Whereas Michael Stipe sounded like he was just moaning on the original,
and the Haiti version is just dull.

But just as when you thought it couldn't get any worse, I'm afraid the
Americans have decided to revive an even bigger abomination.

A re-recording of the 1985 single "We Are The World" featuring Celine
Dion, Harry Connick Jr, and Barbara Streisand.

Need I say more?

I'm just as disappointed that P!nk, Carlos Santana, and Natalie Cole have
put themselves up for this as well.

One of the main reasons however why I'm not so keen on "We Are The World"
is that one of the other records in the charts at the same time
was "Clouds Across The Moon" by The RAH Band.

Further proof that even back in the 80s, record buyers had their minds twisted.

Again to borrow a quote from fellow Westminster alumni Eleri Powell
I'd rather donate £10 to the charity on it's own rather than on those
dreadful recordings.
