"Tune In, And Rip The Knob Off"

I should be lying down now but after a conversation on Facebook with
Chris, I've dug out an old recording from Invicta FM's Breakfast Show
in 1992 with Daryl Denham.

This is more or less a snapshot of the classic era of commercial radio
and how it could sound enthusiastic with punchy production and a really
good blend of current and classic hits with a far loose rotation.

In fact I doubt there was even such a thing as rotation back then but
at the same time it wasn't higgledy piggledy as such.

In terms of jingles and sweepers, you have to love the junction from
the half hour headlines back into the music at 2 minutes in.

Save for the J.J. McKay V/O being "remixed" with the station and Daryl's name.

So many people seemed weary about that idea at Smoke, not least
our original head of news who preferred to use his own more complex
production techniques that even he couldn't get right on air.

Then again it's easy to recreate that sound as shown in the clip
above as a result of me owning the jingles and library tracks
as used.

Overall it helped me realise that I could probably have a go at radio myself,
and a format like this, thrown in with more creativity and new talent
could give commercial radio the kick up the arse it's been needing.

But you know what, if I was in a position of power, I would shut the whole
fucking lot down, and use the money to fund the many community radio stations
in the UK because there's a lot of potential.

That's how we would get independent local radio back on track without
having to please the advertisers.
