Here we go then, almost nearing the start of my final full day here in London for this academic year.
The plan for tonight was to reminisce in the musical video highlights of 1993 but I realised that the CD-R I had it on was one of the many things packed up to go to Canterbury and Youtube was being very slow. So I decided to Fast Forward (see what I did) four years to the Chart Show 1996 Xmas Special.
Quite a different structure from the other ones that I've seen with a countdown of the Top Ten Best Videos of the year. These included "Something For The Weekend" by The Divine Comedy shot in lovely Venice and ever reminding me of my many visits there during college. Also featured in the rundown were Ocean Colour Scene's "The Day We Caught The Train" and an interesting choice in the form of Galliano with "Ease Your Mind". It was another acid jazz stalwart however that went in at Number 1; Jamiroquai and the visually impressive "Virtual Insanity".
With 1996 being the year that interviews were introduced to the Chart Show there were many Star Choices with a selection of performers choosing their own video highlights. These included Ronan and Stephen from Boyzone opting for "Stranger In Moscow" by Michael Jackson, The Spice Girls choosing "Ironic" by Alanis Morrissette, Paul and Jaqui from the Beautiful South nominating "A Design For Life" by the Manics and Matthew Priest from Dodgy (minus the porkpie hat) rather cheekily nominating their own hit "Good Enough".
There was also an appearance from the two Geordies who would later take over the coveted timeslot from the Chart Show; Ant & Dec opting for the ever catchy "Peaches" by the Presidents of The USA.
The Spice Girls were also the recipients of the Best New Act of 1996 with the lovely Louise Nurding as she was then, getting the Solo Artist title. The Worst Video of that year was snooker player Peter Ebdon's attempt at a singing career with "I Am A Clown" which despite it's novelty value is a rather sweet sounding tune!
Instead of a Top Ten there was a countdown of the Top 20 singles of 1996 including a few tracks that I haven't heard in quite a while; "Nobody Knows" by the Tony Rich Project and "Anything" by Michael Jackson's nephews 3T. This was alongside the more obvious hits from the year including "3 Lions", "The Macarena" and "Killing Me Softly" by the Fugees.
Number 1 was community service dodger Mark Morrison and "Return Of The Mack" which along with most of the other tracks in the rundown has aged pretty well.
So how do I plan to spend my last day here? I may actually head over to the furthest North of Harrow and towards Weald. Not that exciting but it certainly kills time and gets me out a bit more.
