Worth The Wait

Des'ree has recently been voted number 1 in a 6Music poll for the worst lyrics in a pop song for 1998 track "Life". I won't repeat them here as I'm sure you know them off by heart although she has managed to beat off other records such as "Rhythm Is A Dancer" by Snap and Oasis' "Champagne Supernova".

Staying in 1998 I had a gander at the edition of the Chart Show from May of that year this morning as planned which really brought back the essence of a traditional summer Saturday morning but in the living conditions I'm happy with now. There were some fantastic exclusives such as the Coors and their cover of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac which was the first of many top 10 hits. Also making their televisual debut were Simply Red with the stunning "Say You Love Me" which thankfully hasn't been played to death as a few of their older tracks.

However the brilliant thing about watching these vintage episodes are the videos that weren't as succesfull as hoped. One of them was Chumbawamba's attempt at a World Cup song; "Top Of The World (Ole Ole) which flopped but on the plus side the band managed to get free tickets for the World Cup after EA featured "Tubthumping" on the soundtrack to their World Cup video game that year.
The specialist chart that week was Indie with Catatonia's "Road Rage" and "If" by the Bluetones which I'd completely forgotten about until now. The Video Vault on the other hand was rather disapointing with Radiohead's "Street Spirit" which was only two years old at the time.

The Top 10 featured some classics such as "Push It" by Garbage and "Feel It" by The Tamperer and that song should have been in the 6music lyrics poll. The Number 1 on the other hand wasn't so good, All Saints and their cover of "Under The Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Thankfully they cut the song off before it got to the part which went "One time, two times, three times" and so on.

I may make a habit out of this every Saturday although most of these episodes seem even more entertaining after a few drinks down the Undercroft on a Monday night. As the old saying goes "whatever floats your boat".
