The Internet and Podcasting module commenced this morning, not a heavilly
exciting start I'm afraid. Basically we went through the good and bad points of radio station websites such as links to station streams not being indicated clearly and whether the site is updated often enough. We also looked at different bitrates and downloadable audio and streaming media with help of visiting lecuturer Dave Sharp and found out a few things about message boards.
One such incident was when BBC London 94.9 removed them from their website after so many negative comments about the rebranding from GLR in 2000 and Matthew enlightened us on when he disguised himself as a anonymous user on the message board adding postive comments in response to the many negative comments presenter Jon Gaunt was getting.
The module involves us working in pairs to build a website with audio and later on we produce a series of podcasts with all the audio produced ourselves which I am really nervous about. The good news however is that Salvo's back to give us a hand with Front Page which will start this coming Thursday. For tomorrow however we've been asked to listen to Front Row with "Humpty" Lawson on BBC Radio 4 or Robert Elm's show on BBC London for an exercise we're being set which I'd imagine involves re-adapting audio from the show for use on the web. Then on a lower note we'll be looking at copyright and legal issues which for me is what prevents podcasts from being a definitive replacement for radio overall.
My mobile's still messed up which means I'll have a search in Harrow for a cheap replacement this weekend although I'm not too downhearted as I managed to get a CD-R with Ghostwatch on it delivered by Ricky from Tudor. At least that means my Media Events essay will start coming to place despite having to return the book by Dyan and Katz to the library as someone's requested it to be on shelf by tomorrow.
As far as practical radio goes however it looks set to be a downwards spiral until the end of semester.
