Listening back to the audio of Refresher's Week can be disheartening to the point of almost reducing me to tears. One such segueway being the transition from Phil and Sam's Dinner Party to Ross Powell flying solo for a two hour extended edition of
"The Live Variety Show" and what makes it sound like two completely different stations due to a sudden change of moods without warning, from an almost lively atmosphere to a rather lonely one.
It's good to be eclectic with output but you need to make sure at the same time that it all flows seamlessly.
I've made sure ever since that whenever we have a special event that there are schedules printed out and on display in the studio which is a simple but effective way of establishing a community environment within the station.
As long as you don't let them show on air, nerves are essential before you go live and I reckon I felt that the most when I did either my final show on S(4)S or the year before when I had Jo and Joey with me on hand and if you've got the right show preceeding you it can work wonders.
In both cases it was the infamous duo Goodlass and Marshall with their silliness and enthusiasm giving me the same sort of buzz as I would get from something as minimal as the junction from TV-AM into ITV's daytime programming, especially on a Saturday morning. Or the pips before the Top 40 on Radio 1 on a Sunday.
I think the boys made the right move bringing their show back to the 5-7 slot for our final broadcast, especially with Goodlass's habits of oversleeping giving them a bit more time to prepare for what I reckon was one of the flagship shows on the station during big events.
I know it's not a great thing to look back on negative parts but in this case it's when you know that they eventually lead to positive outcomes and for me in my present state they don't show any signs of ending.
