1Xtra's basement this weekend saw a very special guest choosing the music in the form of Tony Blackburn. Along with presenter Ronnie Herel they took a look back through the decades of the broadcaster and the musical highlights from various periods. Some of the tracks in the first hour were rather obvious such as "Respect" by Aretha and "He's The Greatest Dancer" by Sister Sledge but towards the end there were some crackers including "Tell Me Why" by Bobby Womack, The Fatback Band's "I Found Lovin" and one that I haven't heard until now which almost had the hairs on my legs standing up; Jennifer Hudson with "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going".
The show overall reinforced why I love the music and radio overall, and Tony mentioned that whilst there were other top soul DJs like Robbie Vincent, they had an "underground approach" and Tony aimed and succeeded in bringing soul music to a bigger audience with his accessible presenting style, if at times a bit too in love with himself but I'm sure that's part of the act!
Listening to some of the choices made me realise that I haven't even played them on my own show so I reckon it's saved a bit of time next year as far as playlists go.
