My continuing love for instant access shows no sign of stopping. Even if I hear a record mentioned on the radio I have to switch off and go into my MP3 folder to find it.
Still reading Moylesies musings, he mentioned Mason Williams (in a cynical manner obviously) and I felt the immediate need to put "Classical Gas" on. Now although I've got the record lurking about somewhere it's not in the M folder of my hard drive's music folder so I ended up sticking a more funkier easy listening track, "Whistle Bump" by Deodato.
I love Classical Gas however, mainly because of a part in the middle where the main tune disapears and in comes a fanfare that sounds like a news intro for a local radio station in the 70s/80s. And oh my, some of them weren't half scary including this one for Radio 210 in 1980 that I wouldn't want to hear in the middle of the night. The tinkly bit would make a good text message tone though.
I'm trying to think of some more but that 210 one is a tough act to follow for warrant of such a phrase. Swansea Sound by Sue Manning in 1981 although it's complemented by a rather funky extended theme. One of those things that you just don't want to end!
Oh yes, and Devonair from the mid-late 80s with the presenter and Andrea Simmonds thrown in for good measure!
I also found it creepy getting caught off guard whenever the reader announced "Independent Radio News" at the end of a bulletin, and was so relieved when they resorted to "It's 3 minutes past..." in September 2002.
But one of my favourite news intros that blends excitment with a hint of being sinister is from Capital Radio in 1987 from the legendary Music Power package.
Michael Jayston AKA The Valeyard from Doctor Who is on voiceover duties and this is one of the many things that defines living in London at an early age.
The jingle continued to be used for quite a while on Capital Gold as well which will be making it's bow this week so I'd see this as a fitting testament.
Hopefully it will make up for my not so brilliant attempt at emulating the station earlier in the year!
