As planned, I was up pretty early to hear Moyles's first show for 2009 and this week they're showing it live via streaming video on the Radio 1 website. It's not the first time I've listened to a radio show that way however as they did the same for the 40th anniversary in late September 2007 although they decided to switch it off during JK & Joel's final Chart Show for some reason or other.
Anyway, Chris has managed to get some new jingles including a revamp of the "Cheesy Song" although it's no longer brand new and relates to each day of the week from now onwards.
I also like the main theme and mini-songs as well because they're in a different key from before although they could make more use of the instrumental gaps to make witty remarks or play sound clips where appropriate. Early days though.
Dom the newsreader seemed to like them as he was moving about to them and playing air bass, so even with the absence of Carpark Catchphrase his invisible bass playing
knows no bounds.
Dave's also got a new theme for his Tedious Link, in fact it's the first time they've changed it in over 7 years going back to when it used to be done at 5:30 on the afternoon show all those years ago.
They've dropped the Half Time Ramble however although Rachel still does the outro which is still good.
However Chris being Chris decided to make comments on the new Newsbeat suite introduced on Saturday and how he thinks that it sounds a bit extreme compared to the previous ones. He even compared it to the infamous (in my opinion) Radio 1 News jingle from the 80s by JAM which probably goes to show that they're better than that at least.
Len Groat mentioned on Jinglemad that he thought the vintage news jingles used by Radio 1 were the market leader.
Yes Len, the market leader in how not to introduce the news on the radio.
I don't know of any other station that has had it resung unsurprisingly, although JAM fan Sean Martin had it done for him with this example and also a sonovox version if I remember correctly.
Back onto the show itself and my personal highlights were when assistant producer Matt Fincham walked into the room and got a lot of stick for his "Lego" haircut and his resemblance to Sue Perkins from the alleged comedy duo Mel & Sue. Personally I think he looks more like Will McDonald who used to be on TFI Friday and people used to shout "Wiiiiiiiiilll!" at him.
There was also the bit when Chris re-invented the rules of Trivial Pursuit by asking the questions on one card but reading the answers from another, after finding two stuck together in a pub.
During this part you got a close up of the jingle monitor whilst it showed Chris holding the cards and you could see some of the audio bits he had including the bed for "Whatity What" which hasn't been done on the show for years.
On that note there was a new competition "Cheggers Pop Quiz" featuring Keith Chegwin and a theme tune sounding similar to his series "Cheggers Plays Pop" with hints of "Pop Muzik" by M.
Whilst the competition was good fun, I can't see it beating Ken Bruce's Popmaster as the best competition on the radio.
Music 4 have now uploaded all the jingles onto their website including a few that haven't been played yet including the Terry Wogan one, and there's plenty more to come, in fact probably more than expected as the year progresses.
I doubt I'll be up every morning to listen, but I'm certain that Moyles and the gang will be around for quite a while yet even if they don't quite manage to beat Terry in the ratings.
However compared to the barrage of male presenter/bimbo duos on commercial radio, they are definitely the best breakfast show on the radio by a long shot.
