The Radio Feature Class Of 08

So there we go, I've just finished listening to 2008's finest and an interesting selection of radio features.

One of them that I liked was 2008 Brand Award winner Sirin and her feature on the story of mensturation. A rather taboo subject but it contained some brilliant creative parts such as a distorted 1940s style voice explaining about how it was dealt with back then. There was also a part looking at how related products were advertised on television
and yes, it did include the Bodyform song.

Tim, one of the technical people in the Media department actually knows the woman who sang that, Stevie Lange a session singer who also did the song in the ads for "Trio" which went to the tune of the Banana Boat song.

Another one I liked was Sarah Smith's feature on "Music From The Mouth".
The main focus was beatboxing but it also looked at accapella vocal groups
which added a nice touch with interpretations of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
and Van Morrison's "Moondance".

It would have been really good if Sarah had managed to get hold of Take 6, the masters of acapellas and the best vocal harmony group in the world.
But overall it was one of the stand outs.

Chris Chilvers' feature involved finding out what it was like to be James Bond by going through all of the conventions, except for killing people of course. My favourite part however was the little dig at the Scouting For Girls song "I Wish I Was James Bond".
Definitely a band who will remind me how rubbish the third year was at University.

Denis did his on ticket touts which included very good use of music such as Air's "La Femme D'Argent" from their Moon Safari album, and Badly Drawn Boy's "You Were Right" from late 2002 which contains that important line "tickets to what you need".

The one I saved until last was Phil Harris's feature on planning the perfect party which featured guest appearances by Trevor Nelson, and ex Capital Radio/LBC presenter Mike Allen now at Smooth Radio London. Phil actually gave me a flyer with his autograph on that I've still got in my room and should really pin it on my board as it's looking rather bare.

Phil said in the feature that it was the people who made the party work overall, but when it comes to succesfull events at Uni, he's the only real man for the job and that's probably what I'll remember him for being the best at during my time at Westminster.

On the subject of features and documentaries it's definitely worth linking to one done by one of our alumni and winner of the 2007 Graham S Brand award, Sarah Thompson who has worked on a documentary for 1Xtra on the late soul vocalist Aaliyah who was taken away from us too soon in August 2001.

I can remember hearing Stephen Sullivan announcing the bad news on Invicta FM that Sunday night in August as it was a week after my grandfather had died and was making visits to and from Suffolk which I found awkward in terms of travelling.

My elder cousin Richard was at Reading that weekend and told me about how during the minutes silence before Eminem's performance, a few attendees started shouting "Timmy!" in the style of the South Park character rather innapropriately.

To be honest I was never really a fan of Aaliyah as I thought she was just another of your usual beats and bassline R&B vocalists but it's good to see Sarah producing documentaries related to the music that she has had great enthusiasm for.

And to tell the truth, I don't think I would be capable enough of producing my own documentary on Earth Wind And Fire or any other band similar to them, so here's hoping she continues to do well.

I'm a tiny bit annoyed as the button in the middle of my USB mouse has become jammed making it impossible for me to scroll down with the cursor in the middle of the screen.
If it gets too much I'll buy a replacement as I doubt they're too expensive.

Although I am slightly annoyed that some of the computers in the radio rooms still have mice with trackballs inside them which are a bugger to use at the worst of times.
