Well it appears that they've introduced the new idents for Radio 1's Newsbeat and on the plus side, it's not too different melodically, although they've added a few extra beats.
I preferred the previous ones myself as along with many other people, I think the beats make it sound too similar to a news jingle on commercial radio.
But at least they've still got the "Duuh, du, Duh-duh!" melody logo that really can't be tampered about with.
On a similar note Key 103 up in Manchester have introduced a new set of jingles from Reelworld in Seattle which follows on from the same theme as their previous package. And I bet I'm not the only one who thinks that their melody logo is very similar to that of one of my old haunts I used to work for, with the third held down longer.
Not too difficult to "pocket the difference" is it?
The lyrics aren't that imaginative either as the repetetiveness reminds me of Capital's Music 4 package from last year which I've heard Chilvers singing a few times as a result of working in that building which now looks after Heart and LBC.
Whilst I was in Harrow this morning I noticed an advert for Heart on a bus and thought "oh no we've been taken over" until quickly realising that Heart 106.2 has been around for 14 years. It's all very confusing.
Returning to Key 103 and whilst their current jingles may not be brilliant, they used to have one of the best top of hour news intros in the early 90s combining JAM's cut 8 from the "Q Cuts" pacakge with Brian James's superb voiceover which would make you proud to live in Manchester.
An off-air example from 1993 with Steve Penk can be heard here, around the time
when Manchester bid for and lost the chance to hold the 2000 Olympic Games.
That's what radio's missing these days as most on air identity lacks any passion of the broadcast area it covers.
Ironically stations broadcasting to not so exciting parts of the country such as the
Lincs FM stations and KCFM in Hull have very good jingles making the stations
the saving grace of otherwise dull places.
