"All Right There Pop Pickers?"

It's been an odd afternoon, I chatted with Eleri on Facebook messenger about really awful dissertation supervisors, such as the one she had last year that decided to bugger off to China on a visit for three months during the period it was meant to be written.

I didn't ask who it was but it's just completely unacceptable.

I've heard a few bad stories about dissertation supervisors from past students but I'll save them for elsewhere.

Countdown was pretty enjoyable this afternoon where the dweller in Dictionary Corner this week is John Seargant on his first appearance on the show since Strictly Come Dancing.

Many people think he's Jo Brand's stunt double (or even Jo Brand herself) but unlike the Hastings born comic, at least he doesn't resort to making up unfunny joke words after every letters game.

Immediately after the show, I ended up falling asleep and had this well bizarre dream about being confronted with the mother of a girl I made faint at a Freshers party in September 2007, and my trying to explain why.

For some other reason I was also engaged in a conversation about long lost records that don't even exist in real life with "sportycarrie" as she's known on Twitter.

I don't know if I actually saw her when I went to Radio 1, although the day I went was the last day before Chris and the team went on their holiday for late July.

I definitely saw the main man himself, and spoke to Dominic Byrne.

It was tough times for Radio 1 however as it was two days after the competitions ban was introduced on the BBC which messed up the "6 Weeks Of Summer" promotion running on the station.

When Chris and the team got back in August there were new jingles and a feature called "Birthday Corner" which lasted for about 6 months that was introduced by another of those gems from Music 4.

I don't think I actually listened to Moyles once during that period in August, not until Radio 1 were celebrating their 40th birthday in September with all that "Established 1967" nonsense.

That's mainly because I was heavily immersed in the launch of Hull's 99.8 KCFM which I may have a listen to later tonight as it's 80s Night again with Steve Jordan.

Haven't heard it for a long while actually.

Back then it practically took over all my radio listening, apart from the Rock Show and Tony Blackburn at KMFM (the latter now presents at the Hull based station as well) and of course the comedy on Radio 4.

Up in 'Ull they're currently playing P!nk's new single "Sober" although I doubt they'll do the dead air joke after the line "# I don't wanna be the girl who has to feel the silence".
I actually quite like her oddly enough although it's fair to say I was turned on since she did "There You Go" almost a decade ago.

Shaun Tilley (no relation) is currently on air even playing his rather dodgy resing of the 80s Radio 1 presenter jingle. I even put together a version for one of our radio lecturers at Uni which surprisingly he was impressed with.

I'd personally prefer a resing of the one used to accompany the 1987 package such as this example done for this obscure fella.

Anyway, I wouldn't say that I'm a mentally crazed fan of Chris Moyles, I've just enjoyed listening to him on and off since he started on early breakfast back in July 1997.

And in all honesty it really was a kick up the arse for the ailing station back then and even to this day he's a lot better than the majority of the so-called entertainment they have on there.

With regards to "mentally crazed", I'd say to the point of actually going in the shower when he tells you to, before playing two back to back records at the "top" of the hour.

It reminds me of Adrian John on the "1 on One" video I have from Radio 1's 21st anniversary where the early show host mentioned that his listeners were so loyal, he would tell them when to get up. Apparently one man stayed in bed for three weeks after Aders forgot to tell him.

Which brings me onto another "Nitty Gritty" as Jake, Spike etc from the Apple Bites Back would call it.

Those living in the past who moan about wanting Radio 1 to return to the days when Mike Read and Simon Bates were on the station.
As I've said before, the above were more or less pompous arses to an extent and didn't really play much a part by the time I started listening to the station almost 20 years ago.

Well, Bates was still on mid mornings but I rarely heard him on air, and Mike Read had been demoted to "Singled Out" and the Sunday afternoon inter-schools quiz
"Pop Of The Form" before getting sacked in 1991, moving to Capital Gold shortly after.

Apparently Mike ended up being sacked from there after around 5 years by Richard Park,
along with Pat Sharp on Capital FM, whilst Alan 'Fluff' Freeman ended up resigning
by bursting into a board meeting and announcing he had joined BBC Radio 2.

The ideal place for the radio king to make his bow.

I can't remember who it was, but when I mentioned this little drop in from the Muppets used by Fluff earlier this week, someone burst out laughing.

It might have been Caroline on Monday night actually, but you're all welcome to make jokes about me being either Statler or Waldorf.
