I hate dissertations. Well, ones that are written in a poncey manner that think they can deviate from what is written down in the brief and still end up
getting a fucking first.
Whereas if I try something slightly different I get told to make changes and it's all a load of nonsense.
I really can't wait to get this module over with.
I'm rather irritated that most of the dissertations I've read in the library don't really relate to the Blackboard Powerpoint document saying that the literature review (even though some of the students haven't used that title) should have an introduction making use of a clear theoretical framework.
After reading a few of the past dissertations I can honestly say, what a load of bollocks.
Anyone who reads this will know that I really enjoy writing things at length, but in terms of dissertations, the ones I have read are just prententious, poncey, and quite possibly pathetic.
Either that or I'm annoyed at not being able to write like that but I'd rather not lead people up the garden path.
Anyway enough moaning.
This morning's edition of The Chris Moyles Show fitted perfectly into that stupid overused description "radio gold" in some cases for all the wrong reasons.
Highlights included Aled getting confused about a text message from a listener who was in an Indian restaurant last night and the waiter went up to him and asked the following;
Waiter: "Curry OK?"
Customer: "Nah I'll probably only be up for doing just one song.."
And if you don't get that, then I'm not going to explain it as it will be amusing to be put into the same mindset as Aled was.
They also started reading out the following paragraph at random and asked Aled to guess what it was;
"I reccomend the porridge, the halibut is nice, you can say without any reply.
But show them **** *****, that's a different matter, they'll all reply..."
I knew what it was instantly but it took the rest of the team apart from Chris and Dom who were in on it, about twenty minutes to work out it was the Kellogg's Bran Flakes ad with the song "They're Tasty Tasty, Very Very Tasty".
The funniest bit however was when to coincide with the Brits, Comedy Dave had invented yet another new game, this time it was called "Brits Or No Brits Box Busters" which was a combination of Blockbusters with Deal Or No Deal, which involved Dave singing the theme tune to the Blockbusters theme.
From a rather trainspotterish level I was surprised they used the dodgy Casio version of the theme rather than the clean version of the original that's circulating around everywhere including this very site.
Anyway, the first part of the game invovled a Gold Run style round with Dom answering questions on tonight's awards such as "What PSB is the band winning the Outstanding Contribution award tonight?"
The only problem was that it was meant to last 60 second but Dave had only found 30 second music which was the Countdown clock unsurprisingly.
Thankfully it didn't mean that it was scary as the real Gold Run and we wouldn't hear the dodgy synth music they'd play if someone didn't make it across the board on the TV show.
However the game got even more complicated which involved a Deal Or No Deal style quiz which for the benefit of being dull, I won't go into detail in.
Chris thought it was too strung out and irritating and encouraged listeners to text in "Worst Quiz Ever" which resulted in the text machine crashing as you'd expect.
Still good fun however and worth waking up for at an early hour.
They also did a special Brits themed "Golden Hour" which was timed well as I won't be able to hear the proper one this Friday as it's my appointment at Laurel House then.
I may need to start packing my stuff as there's quite a lot I want to take back with me to Canters including Richard Lewis heavilly irreverant to the point of negative look back at children's television.
Not to mention that the front cover contains the infamous photo of Carol Hersee and Bubbles the doll.
Like many things, it's iconic for all the wrong reasons.
Anyway I'm about to head into Harrow to grab a few VHS's to tape the Brits, a few more CD wallets, and I'll then set about planning (a loose sense of the word) for tonight's show.
And unlike others on campus, essay deadlines and the dissertation are no excuse for disruption.
Which isn't really surprising because the show takes very little time to prepare whereas the diss takes up quite a while.
Actually I'm starting to feel rather unsure about my lit review.
Maybe I've ended up writing a load of nonsense.
Actually, I'm more than happy to refer to this quote from Christopher Hart who appears to know a thing or to about literature reviews;
"The selection of available documents (both published and unpublished) on the topic, which contain information, ideas, data and evidence written from a particular standpoint to fulfil certain aims or express certain views on the nature of the topic and how it is to be investigated and the evaluation of these documents in relation to the research being proposed. (Hart, 2003: 13)
That's more or less what I've done in terms of my document as it's essentially looking at what's already been written, and mentions how I plan to take their ideas into account and answer any unanswered questions they've left open.
Suck on that.
Anyway, as Freddie once said "The Show Must Go On".
