"Not An Extra, A Supporting Artist"

Continuing with the second series of Extras and episode 4 where Andy is asked to record a short film for charity. One of the others set to appear is Chris Martin from Coldplay who comes across as as Ricky would in either an awards acceptance speech or a Comic Relief appearance, by wanting to use the whole thing just to promote his Greatest Hits album.

It turns out that he's a fan of Andy's sitcom and wants to make a guest appearance. Andy's not so sure but head writer Damon is enthusiastic and gets him to make an apperance that ends up looking like many a pointless guest appearance in an American sitcom.

With the exception of the Simpsons where in most cases they get the piss ripped out of them.

Basically it involves the Coldplay singer coming on set at random and giving a rendition of "Fix You".

The episode also involves Andy getting his show nominated for a BAFTA and the awards themselves where he meets up with an old flame who now appears in Holby City.

He reveals to Maggie that he dumped her because he thought she was boring and Maggie being Maggie reveals all in her recurring habit of making things public that should remain private.

A bit like Phil Landers.

Things get worse when Andy wrangles himself into unforunate incident in a toilet cubicle where his agent is taking drugs with Ronnie Corbett resulting in the three of them being caught out and banned from the BAFTAs.

At the end of the episode Moira Stuart is seen being searched for drugs after her name gets dropped although this scene was cut out of the American version.

Unfortunately for Moira, her professional career as a newsreader would come to an end pretty soon as well after the BBC sacked her in May 2007.

Episode 5 involves Andy agreeing to appear in a stage play directed by Sir Ian McKellen. The bad news for Andy is that it turns out to be a play involving a homosexaul relationship between him and another man and to make things worse, Ian asks him to kiss the fellow actor on the night itself.

Adding to the embarrassment most of Andy's old friends from school show up and make fun of him for hanging out with gay people who turn up including Damon and producer Ian, as well as "Bunny" the panto director from the last series who has fully come out.

Andy decides to stop the play at the last minute before the kiss is due to take place and leaves the stage making an arse of himself.

Maggie on the other hand decides to have a night in with Darren at his house which becomes rather awkward when he decides to get a bit too graphic about the problems of flushing a turd in his toilet.

And so onto the final episode where Andy gets to appear on Jonathan Ross's chatshow where he meets a mother who has a young child with cancer about to go into hospital and she wants Andy to come and visit him in hospital.

Andy as always agrees to do so reluctantly but one of the other guests isn't so impressed that she didn't ask him.
That being Robert Lindsay the star of what has to be one the most overated sitcoms on television.

Yes, I never did understand the appeal of "Citizen Smith".

Andy feeling nervous about the whole thing asks Maggie to come along with him, but she's not the only extra visitor as Robert Lindsay decides to invade the ward feeling bitter about the whole thing and asking the boy if he's ever heard of "Citizen Smith" or writer Alan Bleasdale.

Andy's then asked to make another visit but it clashes with a meeting with Robert De Niro that Darren has actually bothered to organise to avoid getting fired by Andy.

Andy then decides to go to the hospital leaving Darren waiting at the Dorchester hotel with the star of Taxi Driver. It's in this scene that proves that just the sight of Stephen Merchant's face is guaranteed to have me cackling.

I'm now about to go through the special features which include behind the scenes diaries for each episode which I'm really looking forward to.

Hopefully I'll get them out of way before tonight's "Dancing On Ice" where Todd Carty is rumoured to be actually doing the Bolero although they don't normally do that until the grand final. Possibly because everyone's expecting him to go out this week.

I can remember Johnny and Denise on the the Big Breakfast singing it at random points in the show although when they sang it it sounded more like the theme to Doctor Who.

One thing that's definitely happening on tonight's show however is that Roxanne Pallet is braving the fate of a headbanger being incorporated into her programme.

That's bound to have my cursing really loudly if it goes wrong.
