From Robots To Rhythm And Blues

Following the post made about Robot Wars a few days ago, I've managed to find a video of the Plunderbird Boys in a compilation which includes very heavy use of their song they composed for the second wars.

It turns out they built 5 robots all together although whether they were serious is anyone's judgement.

As the series went on Craig Charles began to look even more stupid and sound dreadfully forced making it rather difficult for me to put him in the league as a top funk disc jockey with his show on 6 Music.

That's not to say that the music isn't any good as there are quite a few gems now and again and he's interviewed Bluey from Incognito at least twice with both times being very entertaining with genuine enthusiasm.

Although last week Craig was off and in his place was fashion designer, and fashion expert on the Big Breakfast Wayne Hemmingway, who also designed the Bug digital radio which is still one of my favourite posessions.

With regards to the Big Breakfast it's worth mentioning that he was probably the longest serving team member as he had been doing the weekly fashion item since the 1996 relaunch, through Johnny and Denise, and all the way up to the end.

Not my favourite part of the show in all honesty as I've never really cared for fashion and clothes but quite an achievement nonetheless.

As the the show itself there's quite a good selection of tunes in the playlist such as Inner Life's version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and Chaka Khan's "I Know You I Live You" as sampled by ATFC.

I'll make sure that when I feature Chaka as my Postive Pairing artist on my own show that track will be one of them, but I definitely won't be playing "Ain't Nobody" or "I'm Every Woman" as I wouldn't want to turn into the Heart Network.

There's also some up to date stuff from bands such as Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings with a 60s influenced sound but more convicing than Adele etc.

As I type I've been chatting to Spike about the second year's visit to Somethin' Else and it sounded quite awkward in places.
Nothing to do with the company at all of course, but it will be an interesting topic of conversation for Monday night at the Underpants.

The second years have also been given the formats and roles for the Music Radio module with Spike's group doing a rhythm and blues show designed for Smooth Radio.
That's rhythm and blues not "R&B"

The group consists of Dan Roberts, Oli P, both the Sophies, and Sammy C amongst others.

Spike has got the role of the music producer and has more or less gotten into it
by listening to some vintage rhythm and blues.

Spike told me before the comittee was announced last year that he wanted to be head of music for Smoke, and I reckon he wouldn't have been too bad as he's got quite an eclectic taste and is into bands such as "Hot Club De Paris" who I found out about last year.

I'll look forward to hearing to hearing their efforts if they're going to stream it live like they did last year.
