World Class, My...

Morning, hope things are going OK.

My comments on David Beckham last night weren't met with the nicest of responses but in this case I know that I'm not the only one who wasn't impressed.

Alan Green on 5 Live's 606 got into quite a big argument with a fan over his defence for the former England captain who Alan has quite a grudge against.

The whole programme also brought another thing to mind the stupid and overblown use of the phrase "world class" which in football is definitely overused.

It's definitely worse than "Legend" and I'm sure I've heard people describe certain radio presenters as "world class" in a similar manner.

I reckon the one that springs to mind the most is probably Scott Mills, although Moyles has a better chance of actually achieving that status as it helps that his show is broadcast round the world via Sirius which happens to be one of the main topics of discussion on today's show.

Although I'm only really interested in his use of a CD by the Shawn Lee Ping Pong Orchestra called "Hit The Hits" which contains rather bizarre instrumental covers of pop songs such as "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", "One Thing" by Amerie, "Rehab", and even "Once Around The Block" by Badly Drawn Boy.

More or less in the same vein as Ronson but this album came out in October 2007 to little reception. Rather unsurprisingly I've only just discovered it now but I may have a listen to some snippets later on now that iTunes is working in halls.

There's also been more Twitter talk with Chris going on about the photos he took whilst strolling in London yesterday, and how Tweeting whilst on the move is rather dangerous with regards to bumping into lamp posts etc.

Some of the photos taking included this one from outside a greasy spoon which must be any other individuals ideal of bliss, and bumping into Zane Lowe, who many thought was Michael Greco AKA Beppe Di Marco from Eastenders.

Carrie was also talking about TweetDeck which is like a desktop application where Twitter works like an instant mesenger. I tried it myself last night although I think the whole thing looks rather ugly and I prefer to Tweet via the website itself.

The plan for today was to go into the library to have a gander through past dissertations, but because of the STI awareness day and all the chaos around campus, I'll probably save it until Saturday when I go into the library for the usual dosage of rummaging and ripping.

Hoepfully not as early as the last few weeks.

And the other reason partly because I'm still a bit of a lazy so and so, but it doesn't mean I won't be occupied as I'm planning a washday in the laundrette.

I may also avoid the Valentines do at Area tonight despite the fact that Chris and Phil will be DJing (and actually playing some party songs for a change with regards to Area events this year) although I'm not too impressed by Stewart's rather snide comments on Facebook and a preference for "Bored Of The Rings" marathons.

Actually on that note I haven't even started watching my recently bought Doctor Who DVDs including Genesis Of The Daleks from 1975, but I must be honest, that story's dreadfully strung out over 6 episodes which is one of my major bugbears over the original series.

I don't think we even see one of the metallic shells until near the very end of the first episode.

I may stay in tonight with the Krypton Factor as always, and then Jamie's "Show 25" on Smoke Radio if that's going ahead as at least they'll admit they're trying to be like
Zane Lowe by taking the mick out of listeners being "on board".

In my honest opinion, and without naming names, I honestly think that a lot of people on the station (and probably every other student station) are falling into that category by sounding too similar to bigger name presenters they admire and refusing too admit it.

That's rather upsetting, and why I'm starting to lean away from the station now due to the lack of the overall sense of fun behind the scenes which has been missing since the likes of Joey and Tim Pryor were around.

Then again the SRA judges won't be looking for people who are ripping off Chris Moyles etc but then again we don't actually hear the bleeding entries at the awards so you can never be sure.

I'm not sure if I'll even go this year as I'm not wasting 30 fucking quid on a meal that looks like something that would come out of my mouth rather than go in.

A bit like a chinese takeaway really.

To be fair though, I referred to Robbie Vincent on my own show last night after playing a record from one of the Jazz Funk Mastercuts compliations he arranged and said that I was a rather poor imitation of him.

Even to the extent of occasionally playing the liner "If It Moves, Funk It!".

Any jazzy soul fan must have all 7 of those compliations in the original series.

To finish with, Johnnie Walker has started broadcasting a show on Saturday nights in Russell Brand's slot on Radio 2 as "Pirate Johnnie Walker" in a similar style to his Radio Caroline shows 40 years ago.

This of course has resulted in the guys at Wise Buddah creating these rather impressive jingles reminiscent of the old PAMS jingles from back in the day and it's rather interesting to hear the familar Radio 2 musical logo done in that style.

Personally I think the female vocals sound not too dissimilar to The Roches, a vocal trio from the states who were quite popular in my house due to Dad having all their LPs.

Some of the early ones were produced by King Crimson guitarist and Toyah Wilcox's husband Robert Fripp.

Back to Johnnie, and the new jingles also include sonovox as you'd expect although that doesn't mean the man himself doesn't play the (in)famous jingle "He's In!, He's On!" which was directly responsible for Birmingham born Peter Dingley changing his name when joining Radio Caroline due to all the jingles they'd ripped off from American stations.

I recorded the first show whilst up in the radio rooms yesterday and may have a listen later on.

Although to be honest there's tons of radio recordings I've got on my computer that I haven't even listened to.

Although once again, it's all worth preserving.
