Once again it was another Sunday well spent with Robbie on Jazz FM where this week's highlights included a rather nice track from saxophonist Walter Beazley's new album and also a superb cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" by another sax player, this time by Richard Elliot who also has a new LP out later in the year.
My only real downside to the show are the rather cheesy drop ins from all the soul vocalists he's met such as Marlena Shaw, Chaka Khan, The Perri Sisters etc who appear now and again saying that they know "Robbie Vincent has the essential rhythms".
More or less in the same way as Moyles's "Whenever I'm In the UK" ones.
Although I'm probably being a bitter old fool because I don't have any of my own
to play with but as I've got a camera now, it gives me the opportuinity of getting
photographs with various people and so on and I'd rather show off them
rather than an unimaginative voice drop in.
We had a few good ones on Smoke a few years ago when one of our first "big name guests" was Eugene Sully from Big Brother 2005 who did a few ones that went "evicting the crap songs!".
Nowadays it seems to be all the good songs that get evicted leaving the crap being played out far too often.
To be fair it's not all rubbish to start off with in most cases, but I don't want to hear records being played more often than they should be. That maybe the case why the radio is barely switched on in my room as just background.
It even goes for records I like as there are a few EWF and Al Jarreau albums that I've really enjoyed listening to but haven't touched them for over six months.
I've even resorted to tagging certain MP3 files with an "X" in case they're ones I really like and would want to play on the soul show, because let's face it it's difficult to remember a song by its title after first listen.
As for this afternoon, I plan to spend it watching and anlysing on this very site, the second series of Extras. There are actually one or two I haven't really seen in full including the David Bowie episode that has the song about the "Little Fat Man" or whatever it is.
It should be quite a laugh. ("Is he havin' a laugh!")
