"Selective Wednesdays?"

There was a rather amusing or should I say nostalgic Tweet posted by Ross T consisting of the chorus of "The Friday Song" as done on Channel 4's Big Breakfast when Johnny Vaughan hosted the show.

This was basically a specially written topical song each done at the end of Friday's show where Johnny and Denise/Kelly/Liza would sing at the staircase of Bow Locks
with Harry accompanying them and the crew on an upright piano and
occasionally with his jazz band, all to the tune of "She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain"
or to all the Chelsea haters "# Have You Ever Seen Chelsea Win The League,
(YES WE HAVE!)"
.

One such rendition from Novermber 1998 can be seen here.

This used to be the part of the show I would set the video to record every Friday unless I was on half term or holidays and whilst everyone remembers the chorus, some of the verses were quite funny such as this example when Amanda Holden had a fling with Neil Morrissey behind Les Dennis's back;

"Family Fortunes for Les Dennis are not fair,

When he looks around his wife just isn't fair,

And whilst he's moping sadly, She's out behaving badly,

Will he get her back? Our Survey Said Uh Uhhh!"

That's probably my second favourite song from the show with my overall favourite being "Steps Of Wooooooee! Hey!, Steps Of Woe" to the tune of Rock And Roll Part 2.

Which brings to mind what that song could sound like if it actually had lyrics as illustrated by this send up that I've had lurking around for years.

In all fairness the full length version of Rock And Roll Parts 1 and 2 does have vocals towards the end although I doubt people would be singing it now.

Although I did play it during my set at Sarah's birthday do a couple of weeks ago.

Moving onwards, I think that the music Chris Moyles uses when he's talking about his Kilimanjoro climb, sounds like the late Maynard Ferguson's version of the theme to Rocky.

It's not the first time he's used it as Music 4 originally made it in 2005 as the theme for Chris and the team's New Year Detox.
The one that's used now has a few extra guitar riffs with the "derr der-der derr" Radio 1 instrumental logo which is pretty much dominant in the stations output with the 1tros being the prime example.

With STI day being a priority on campus, today may be the first time since Freshers Week 2005 that I've not fully participated in a special Smoke Radio event.

Then again I didn't do a show for RAG (Raising and Giving) day which took place around this time last year where just about every show consisted of a waxing.

I think Oli P even waxed his penis which was rather ambitious.

I've never been a victim of one, yet, but I think my days are numbered.

And if it happens then at least it will be done for beneficial results.

Max DMC mentioned last night that despite moving to Wednesdays he's still going under the "Selective Saturdays" banner because there's still the Facebook group and you can't change the name of one once it's been set up.

Although because Max isn't too good on the money side of things it may mean that show will have to go back to it's original timeslot if he ends up getting a part time job.

Then I may take the risk of giving myself 100% extra because let's face it there's a lot of records that I really want to play on the show before leaving and plenty of artists I'd love to have as a Positive Pairing but may never get the chance.

I may do a whole show full of Positive Pairings actually after Easter as well as possibly another covers special and definitely a live special.

Anyway, back to Max and one of the records played was "General Hospital" by Syncopix which happens to be one of the many melodic Drum and Bass tunes from the Hospital Records label.

Ross Powell used to play a lot of that when he used to present the Drum and Bass show on the station in the second year and it more or less had me converted as artists such as High Contrast and London Electricity have influences of jazzy soul in their records, rather than just incomprehesible beats.

It's interesting as Max comes from the Bristol area and Ross is from around Bath and there's quite a big D&B scene out West so it's good to hear all the good stuff being played.

I think the first one that really turned me on was Grooverider's remix of 808 State's "Pacific" in 1998 and was included on the CD single re-release that I was pleased about.

Things haven't been too good for Grooverider recently, although despite his problems he's now back presenting his Radio 1 show along with Fabio where I happened to hear that remix being played for the first time 11 years ago.

Even though 808 State are a Manchester band, the tune will always remind me of London.

Although London's not really that prolific in terms of breaking bands, compared to Manchester.

Just my general observation.
